I am born and raised in south Louisiana where most would consider the birth place of Specklebelly Goose Calling as we know it today. Speck hunting is more than just a hobby for us down here, it is part of our culture and daily lives 365 days a
year. From practicing and tuning speck calls, calling in competitions, repainting decoys, working on blinds, training our dogs and working the crops in the fields..a lot goes into our off season to make for a successful opening morning of speck hunting. Years ago almost 80% of the speck population migrated to Louisiana but several different factors have changed that over the years and speck hunting has become more challenging in all aspects which in turn makes it more fun and more gratifying when I fill my strap with birds.
Competition calling is something I like to do in the off season. It’s a great way to stay in touch with friends, better your calling and be better prepared for opening morning. This year I was fortunate enough to win the 1st Place 2017 Open Snow Goose World Championship, 2nd & 3rd place Team Snow Goose and 3rd place in the team speck at the World Waterfowl Calling Championship in Katy Tx put on by Team Real Duck.
Whether I’m in the blind or on the competition stage the only call you will see me using is Redbone Specklebelly and Snow Buzzard calls that were developed by my mentor and friend Mr. Nathan Wright who is considered the greatest speck caller of our times and the pioneer of the sustained air method speck callers use today. Decades of research and development have gone into the Redbone Speck and Snow calls to bring customers the most realistic sounding user-friendly calls on the market along with an instructional DVD and CD customers receive with each call that was the first of its kind in the industry and is second to none. Redbones motto is “Quality call with Quality instructions”. This allows beginners to learn the basics before starting their new venture into speck calling as well as allowing the seasoned veteran to sharpen their skills. Still, to this day you will find this CD in my truck because I am a forever student of speck calling. If you want to become an excellent speck caller you have to practice, practice, practice! Nothing good comes easy!!
The world of speck calling and hunting has grown significantly in the past decade and its popularity is at an all time high and I am proud to be apart of the speck warehouse team and look forward to sharing information with speck hunters worldwide.
